The Problem Solving for Better Health (PSBH) program has been implemented in many countries in the world. The misson of the program is to assist participants in developing small scale. Problem solving program will directly benefit many people. PSBH participants are encouraged to generate new ideas and methods to more effectively utilized the resources that are currently available to them to solve specifics health problems in their areas. In 2009, Shantou University Medical College cooperated with Dreyfus foundation, the tutors and students were  trained  by a training course , and PSBH projects were implemented.

The women and children's committee & children center under the state council(China) issued “Investigation of the 0 to 6 years old children’s health condition in ten cities of China”. The result showed that among 0 to 6 years old children, malnutrition rates is 10.6%, severe malnutrition rate is 5.36%, growth retardation rate is 3.83%, overweight rate is 5.95%, Obesity rate is 3.83%. The status of malnutrition and growth retardation is worse in southern China. Disease prevention and control bureau of the Ministry of Health released the children’s nutrition guideline in 2007. It points out that preschool phase is important time for forming good eating and living habits to children.

In order to help the pre-school children to form rational dietary habit and healthy living manner, and to provide an opportunity to students who implemented the PSBH projects for combining medical theory with health care practice better, as well as to train and culture students' scientific creational ability and professional comprehensive ability, we applied and implemented a PSBH project entitled of “Research and Intervention of the Preschool Children’s Nutritional Condition”.

 

The following is about the implementation of the PSBH project,

1. To investigate the nutritional status of some 100 preschool children and their parents’ knowledge about nutrition at two kindergartens(one is in downtown district , another is in suburb) in Shantou.

2. To educate the preschool children and their parents of two kindergartens in Shantou about nutritional knowledge and healthy behaviors.

3. Through the propaganda and education to improve the nutritional knowledge of preschool children and their parents, help them build up more appropriate dietary habits and lift style.

Note

All statistical analyses were performed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) Program version 18 for windows. 
The variable rates before and after educations were compared with each other using two sample test ( U test  ).The differences with P values <0.05 
were considered as significant.

Achievement: 

During the Nutritional and health life style education, we compared the preschool children’ dietary behavior that before and after education. Results showed that preschool children’s dietary behavior have changed obviously after the nutritional education. After the nutritional education, children " who eat different vegetables every day” has increased significantly than that before. And children "who eat snacks" or "eat fast food", as well as "drink carbonated beverage" reduced significantly (table 2, table 3). Nutritional education results between kindergarten at suburb (L ǜ Miao Kindergarten) and kindergarten at downtown (the first welfare Kindergarten) was slightly different. After the education,children learned the correctly method to  brush their teeth and  to wash hands, these are benefit to cultivate the children to form a healthy lifestyle.
